About one fifth of all emissions that cause climate change come from the production of meat and dairy products (milk, cheese, ice cream). They cause more emissions than all cars, trucks, aircraft and ships together. Production of meat from ruminant animals (beef and lamb meat) leads to the largest emissions.
In order to cope with a maximum of 1.5 – 2 degrees of warming of the planet, consumption of meat and dairy products must decrease sharply – while fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) are phased out. Both things are necessary to prevent a climate disaster. The easiest and most effective way for many to reduce their own climate impact is to eat less meat and dairy products and more protein crops, vegetables and fruits.
